The Immaculate Collection is the first greatest hits album by Madonna, released on November 13, 1990, by Sire Records. It contains fifteen of her hit singles recorded throughout the 1980s, as well as two brand new tracks, “Justify My Love” and “Rescue Me.”

One of the greatest greatest hits albums of all time. It sums up the first stage of Madonna’s career flawlessly.

Number one on the LP charts from 24 November 1990 until the 19th of January 1991.

Drew Mackie of People, called the album “the best-named greatest hits compilation ever” and “easily one of the best greatest hits albums ever.”

NME ranked it as the second-best greatest hits album of all time, claiming that “In her pomp, Madonna was the best pop star of her time.”

What makes it so great? Well, according to the NME…

The Immaculate Collection, her first greatest hits, came out in 1990, capturing the controversy-stirring brilliance of “Like a Virgin,” “Justify My Love,” and “Material Girl.” In terms of capturing a moment, this is as immaculate as it gets.

All Music Guide rate it five stars but also offer this minor criticism … “on the surface, the single-disc hits compilation The Immaculate Collection appears to be a definitive retrospective of Madonna’s heyday in the ’80s. After all, it features 17 of Madonna’s greatest hits, from “Holiday” and “Like a Virgin” to “Like a Prayer” and “Vogue.” However, looks can be deceiving. It’s true that The Immaculate Collection contains the bulk of Madonna’s hits, but there are several big hits that aren’t present, including “Angel,” “Dress You Up,” “True Blue,” “Who’s That Girl,” and “Causing a Commotion.”

By the way, the greatest hits album the NME have above Madge in the best of all-time is the Best of by BLUR.
